Cryptids & CRyptozoology
Cryptids are animals whose existence is not proven, though people claim they exist ("Cryptid Definition & Meaning"). Cryptozoology refers to the study of hidden animals; however, some have found issues with this particular definition, given that it could refer to animals that do not fit with most people's ideas of "cryptids." Therefore, some claim that cryptozoology is the study of animals known from indirect evidence, such as eyewitness accounts or photographs (Loxton, Prothero & Sherman, Abominable Science!: Origins of the Yeti, Nessie, and Other Famous Cryptids, pp. 16-17).
Many people believe in cryptids, but only a small subsection will actively search for them, or research them. Some of these people are part of professional, organized groups that do sometimes allow membership to outsiders. However, there are also some people who either believe in cryptids, or simply like the idea of cryptids, and use them as a way to bond and joke with others. These groups may have their differences, but they all have one thing in common: a love for the unknown.
